1.       Cucumbers have a history of being cultivated for some 3000 years! Some versions of history trace its cultivation to India and from there, it spread to Western Asia, including China. From Asia, the cucumber travelled to Europe, finding itself cultivated even in Greece and Italy.

2.       Cucumbers were introduced in England as far back as the 14th century, but somehow, the cultivation and died, and for nearly 250 years, there was no cucumber in England!

3.       The legendary explorer Columbus had the cucumber planted even in Haiti as far back as 1494! And from there it even found its way to Canada’s Montreal where it was later discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1535.

4.       There are three main varieties of cucumbers – the pickling type, slicing type, and the seedless type. It is the pickling type which is most often used to prepare the cucumber relish.

5.       The pickling variety of cucumber differs from the other two types in that the flesh is densely packed. It is also shorter than the other two varieties, thicker and with bumps along its outer skin. Its colour too ranges from a creamy yellow to dark green.

6.       In botany, cucumber is actually classified as a berry, but much like that other popular salad vegetable tomato, cucumbers are perceived as vegetables and consumed as such.

7.    The cucumber relish is actually a type of pickles cucumber and is imparted sweetness alongside saltiness for multiple flavours.
